The Municipio of Isla de Pinos (Isle of Pines) is one of the twenty six municipios in the province of Havana, Cuba. This municipio covers a surface of 3,061 square kilometers. Located to the south of the island of Cuba, this is the second largest island in the Cuban archipelago; the island of Cuba being the largest.


Note: A “municipio” (plural: municipios) is the first political division of the provinces in Cuba. It is similar, in many ways, to the county or parish in which a state is divided in the United States.


Population: The estimated population of this municipio in 2002 was 72,885 persons.

Jurisdiction: The Municipio of Isla de Pinos was established August 14, 1874; its territory was segregated from the Municipio of Bejucal. In 1940 it was judicial circuit (partido judicial) and the fiscal district (distrito fiscal).

Columbia: Small town. In 2002 had an estimated population of 90 people.


Mac Kinley: Town 12 kilometers from Nueva Gerona. In 1943 had a population of 156 people.


Santa Bárbara: This town is near some excellent natural springs. In 1943 its population was 370 people, increasing to 2,874 in 2002.
